Joost L M Kanen is director of Gryphon Carbon Consultancy, a consultancy specialising in carbon emissions trading. He is a financial economist with broad experience and expertise in energy and carbon markets, market efficiency, trading and derivatives. In 2004 he started the Carbon Market Platform, a think-tank on carbon issues, and before that was a senior manager at Ernst & Young Corporate Finance, leading the Dutch Energy, Chemicals & Utilities team in M&A transactions. He joined Ernst & Young from energy trading company Reliant Energy Europe, where he mainly worked on M&A in the UK, German and Dutch power markets.

Kanen was a member of the Dutch delegation to the COP 5 Kyoto negotiations in Bonn in 1999 and managed climate change and emissions trading policy for the Energy Strategy directorate of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. He also served as a strategic consultant with Policy Research Corporation in Antwerp, mainly working on offshore oil and gas policies on behalf of the Dutch government.
