EU Emissions Trading Webinar
Analysing the impact of aviation, auctioning and new offset rules
Online, 2 June 2010
Date: 2 June, Wed
Time: 14:30 UK time / 9:30 EDT / 15:30 CEST
Location: Online, delivered through your browser
Duration: approx. 90 minutes
The key issues to be covered include:
Presentation one - Auctioning of allowances:
Up to now, most EU allowances have been given to companies covered by the scheme free of charge (which has resulted in windfall profits for some companies) but in Phase III, many more will be auctioned. The precise percentage to be auctioned, how the percentages vary from industry to industry and from country to country are all controversial issues.
Trevor Sikorski, Director, Environmental Market Research, Barclays Capital
Presentation two - International offsets (CDM and JI):
If companies find it difficult or very expensive to reduce their own emissions sufficiently to stay within their 'cap' (the number of EU allowances they were given) they can use CDM or JI credits to partially 'offset' their emissions. In Phase III of the EU ETS, however, the Commission plans to tighten up on the number of CDM/JI credits that are allowed and on the type of offset projects that are eligible.
Emmanuel Fages, Head of Market Analysis and Regulatory Affairs, Orbeo
Presentation three - Aviation:
Introduction of aviation sector into the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (much resisted by airlines due to the poor economic state of the industry). The airlines are expected to be net buyers of EU allowances so there will be an impact on all other participants in the EU ETS.
Alex Meredith, Associate, Hunton & Williams; Vice-Chair, Aviation Working Group, CMIA
