The EU’s decision to regulate all airlines flying into or out of the 27-nation bloc under its Emissions Trading System (ETS) from January next year has met fierce opposition from many airlines. They warn of a substantial additional cost burden, a loss of competitiveness, and even a trade war with China. Other observers say the initial cost burden will be minimal, dismiss talk of a trade war as scaremongering and note that aviation emissions are rising fast.

Hear our speakers discuss the likely impact:

Forestry and other land-use projects are among the fastest growing sectors of the carbon market and have been stimulated recently by the Cancun Agreement and inclusion in the emerging Californian cap-and-trade framework.  However, developing and investing in REDD+ and other land-use carbon offsets requires specialised expertise.

Our series of four webinars – held in February & March 2011 - and produced in association with Terra Global Capital – covered all the key technical aspects of developing and investing in REDD+.

The Impact of Aviation, Auctioning and New Offset Rules - 2 June 2010

PRESENTATION ONE - Auctioning of allowances
Up to now, most EU allowances have been given to companies covered by the scheme free of charge (which has resulted in windfall profits for some companies) but in Phase III, many more will be auctioned. The precise percentage to be auctioned, how the percentages vary from industry to industry and from country to country are all controversial issues.
Trevor Sikorski, Director, Environmental Market Research, Barclays Capital.

PRESENTATION TWO - International offsets (CDM and JI)
If companies find it difficult or very expensive to reduce their own emissions sufficiently to stay within their 'cap' (the number of EU allowances they were given) they can use CDM or JI credits to partially 'offset' their emissions. In Phase III of the EU ETS, however, the Commission plans to tighten up on the number of CDM/JI credits that are allowed and on the type of offset projects that are eligible.
Emmanuel Fages, Head of Market Analysis and Regulatory Affairs, Orbeo.

PRESENTATION THREE - Aviation
Introduction of aviation sector into the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (much resisted by airlines due to the poor economic state of the industry). The airlines are expected to be net buyers of EU allowances so there will be an impact on all other participants in the EU ETS.
Alex Meredith, Associate, Hunton & Williams; Vice-Chair, Aviation Working Group, CMIA.
