UN Global Compact ejects 400 companies

London, 31 January: Close to 400 companies have been delisted from the UN Global Compact for not reporting progress on their corporate responsibility initiatives.
Thousands of companies worldwide have signed up to the Global Compact since its launch in 2001, committing themselves to 10 principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.
Each year, signatories must submit a ‘communication on progress’ a public statement on how they are implementing the 10 principles. If they fail to report for three consecutive years, they are ejected from the scheme.
Along with the 394 delisted companies, another 510 have been marked as ‘inactive’ for missing two consecutive deadlines. The voluntary initiative has 3,380 active members, while 410 have missed one deadline.
“We are disappointed each time a company is delisted from the Global Compact, but this is a necessary measure to uphold the value of the good efforts being made by the majority of our participants,” said Georg Kell, executive director of the Global Compact, when 203 companies were delisted last year.
