Nature-based initiative of the year: Sustainable Carbon's Amazon REDD+ project

Situated in one of the most high-risk regions for deforestation, ABC Agropecuária Brasil Norte and Sustainable Carbon's project claims to have avoided over 4,000 hectares of deforestation since 2017.

Winner of the Nature-based initiative of the year, the project is transitioning over 140,000 hectares of native forest from traditional land use to an integrated REDD strategy – Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation. This combines forest conservation, forest management techniques that reduce harmful impact, and delivering socio-environmental programmes.

In a bid to improve biodiversity and protect threatened species, the project has maintained ecological corridors and used advanced forest cover monitoring cross-referenced with official platforms.

Its community efforts have also involved directly engaging with five local communities, with plans to expand this to a further eight nearby communities.

One Sustainable Company Award judge praised the "well-designed project" for using some of the "gold standard" techniques for forest protection. The judging panel also highlighted the measurable impact of the project so far.
