Agrocortex Florestas do Brasil sustainably manages over 186,000 hectares of native tropical rainforest. Fully certified under the Forest Stewardship Code (FSC), the company develops projects based on the concept of “low-impact forest management,” ensuring the protection and maintenance of the ecological characteristics of the areas under its stewardship.
According to the company, this work has contributed to avoiding more than 11,000 hectares of deforestation and reducing over 4 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions, generating REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) carbon credits verified by Verra, under its Voluntary Carbon Standards, and Ecologica Institute's SOCIALCARBON standards.
Agrocortex’s sustainable forest management also stands out for the adoption of innovative technologies, such as satellite monitoring, mobile field data collection, and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), as well as ongoing fauna and biodiversity monitoring programs and positive social, economic, and environmental impact initiatives.
One Sustainable Company Awards judge praised the firm for "taking forward technical innovation on verification" and creating a scalable model and the "real-world impact" from the project, particularly amongst local communities.
Located at Fazenda Seringal Novo Macapá, one of Brazil’s poorest regions, Agrocortex reports it has generated over 3,000 jobs since 2014 and currently has over 60% of its technical and leadership positions held by women.
Judges further noted how the project "demonstrates the possibility of aligning climate mitigation, biodiversity conservation and socio-economic development", adding that it is "impactful work".
