Sustainable Investment Awards 2026

Sustainable investment engagement initiative of the year - Americas: NextEra Energy

Investor engagement with utilities is increasingly shifting from broad climate commitments toward scrutiny of how transition plans are implemented in practice. A recent engagement initiative focused on NextEra Energy, which the judges labelled a "very thorough and well-thought-through initiative," reflects that shift.

Conducted through direct dialogue and Climate Action 100+, the initiative centres on the American utility company's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions and 100% clean electricity generation by 2045.

Engagement has focused less on headline pledges and more on operational issues, including capital allocation, fossil fuel exposure, disclosure quality and policy alignment, according to Mirova, an investor which was involved in the engagement.

Partly as a result of engagement efforts, in 2025 NextEra disclosed its Scope 3 and methane emissions for the first time and announced partial divestments from oil and gas assets.

The company operates one of the world's largest renewable energy portfolios, with around 20GW of wind and 15GW of solar capacity, while maintaining one of the lowest carbon intensities among major US utilities. In 2024, it added 4.2GW of solar and 0.8GW of wind capacity without adding new gas-fired generation.
