Where and how do you source your data?

MSCI’s 620+ ESG experts and technologists use artificial intelligence to extract investment-relevant insights from unstructured data. On average, roughly 35% of the data that influences an MSCI ESG Rating is not provided by the company but sourced by analysts. Analysts continuously evaluate ESG and climate risks including daily monitoring of 3,400 media publications and updates from public documents and third-party datasets. They normalize a huge volume of data with the help of technology to create standardized, comparable ratings, rankings and benchmarks that are decision-useful to investors.

MSCI’s ESG Ratings model and methodology, which are publicly available, use a rules-based approach to identify industry leaders and laggards according to their exposure to ESG risks and how well they manage those risks relative to peers. In addition to real-time data, MSCI offers nearly 50 years of historical data on equities, factors and fixed income, more than 30 years of ESG and climate knowledge and over 15 years of ESG Ratings time series data.
