This is an exciting opportunity for a lawyer to make a key contribution to the work of our Company & Financial Project.
ClientEarth is a member of the Commonwealth Climate and Law Initiative (CCLI) which has a goal of promoting a rapid behavioural transformation of corporate governance policy and practice in relation to climate change risks. During 2017, the CCLI will be organising a series of symposia in Commonwealth countries alongside published reports communicating the output of the research programme.
You will represent ClientEarth at the CCLI and be responsible for managing ClientEarth's legal research and analysis on behalf of the CCLI. This requires examining the legal basis for directors to take account of, and disclose, climate change risks and the societal response to climate change under prevailing statutory and common law.
The successful candidate will be a versatile lawyer with relevant legal experience in a corporate governance setting and experience of advising listed companies on these matters. More generally, you will be highly organised, a strategic thinker, able to apply legal skills creatively, an excellent communicator and comfortable conveying complex ideas to a wide variety of audiences. You are committed to environmental issues, social justice and to urgent action on climate change.
ClientEarth is a public interest environmental law group founded in 2007. We bring together law, science and policy to create practical solutions to key environmental challenges. You will be joining an organisation of 90-strong staff, including legal experts qualified in more than ten jurisdictions based across offices in London, Brussels and Warsaw. We also have a newly established fundraising office in New York, as well as lawyers in Western- and Central- African countries.
Working in partnership with civil society and policy-makers, we are committed to securing the rights of citizens and civil society to participate in, and have access to information and justice on, environmental matters. Our programmes cover democracy, wildlife, oceans, forests, energy, climate change, business and health.
In October 2016, ClientEarth's CEO James Thornton won a prestigious European 'special achievement' award from the Financial Times, at a high-profile ceremony for innovative lawyers. ClientEarth also received a major accolade for innovation – securing the 'New Model Legal Business' title.
