Lead manager of the year, social bonds - sovereign; Lead manager of the year, sustainability bonds - financial institution; Social bond of the year - financial institution: Citi

Citi scooped three awards this year, including Lead manager of the year, social bonds – sovereign, Lead manager of the year, sustainability bonds – financial institution and Social bond of the year – financial institution.

In sovereign bonds, Citi led $1 billion in sovereign social bond issuance in 2024 across three tranches for the Republic of Chile, which it described as "one of the largest and innovative issuers in the sovereign sustainable bond market". The bank said it had also been active in the broader sovereign social and sustainability bond market, including as a sustainability structuring bank and lead manager on sustainable bond frameworks and transactions with a social element.

As Lead manager of the year, sustainability bonds – financial institution, Citi was praised by Sustainable Debt Awards judges for its "noteworthy" work in bringing to market several new issuers and regions from the emerging markets. This included lead managing five inaugural sustainability deals in 2024, including Saudi Investment Bank, Uzpromstroybank, Isbank, QNB Finansbank and Al Rajhi Bank. It also structured Uzbekistan's sustainable financing framework and the sustainability framework for Woori Bank.

For the Social bond of the year – financial institution, Citi was recognised as the only bank for issuing a two-tranche $3 billion social bond in 2024, the largest ever from a private issuer.

Awards judges noted the bond's 'significant size' supporting 28 different emerging market countries around the world in line with eligibility criteria defined in its social finance framework. The use of proceeds form the bond will go towards financing a range of projects including access to financial services, affordable housing, basic infrastructure, healthcare and education in underserved and unbanked communities.
