Marsham Investment Management secured the fixed income fund of the year award for its flagship Transitional Issuers Strategy funds.
The actively managed funds were praised for their focus on identifying key hard-to-abate – but high transition impact – issuers within sectors such as mining, energy, industrials, and utilities.
"Corporates within these industries have often fallen out of favour amongst sustainable investors and have even been susceptible to hard exclusions within investment mandates," Marsham IM told Environmental Finance. "However, we believe it will be these issuers, particularly those within these industries, where change will have the largest impact on the future of the environment".
Launched in 2020 with US dollar- and Euro-denominated funds, the Marsham Transitional Issuers strategy added a sterling fund in 2021. Since inception, the funds have performed exceptionally well over various macro environments, in both up- and down-market periods.
The asset manager was also noted for its pioneering use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools – in particular, provided by Sevva – and its proprietary Transitional Issuer Scorecard. The scorecard assesses the 'decarbonising' and 'greening' progress of the issuer (with additional qualitative factors and controversies being incorporated). The former focuses on efforts to improve the efficiency and emissions profile of existing activities, the latter on the investments and revenues supporting the replacement of high-emitting technologies with greener alternatives.
