Sustainable Investment Awards 2021

Hedge fund manager of the year: Ecofin

A key factor behind Ecofin winning Hedge fund manager of the year was its energy transition strategy.

Ecofin, a London-based sustainable strategy investment company, combined lower volatility products with attractive returns throughout 2020 despite the coronavirus pandemic.

The organisation's energy transition strategy focuses on the listed equity securities of global companies affected by the drive towards clean energy generation, energy efficiency, technological advances and changes in energy policies.

Ecofin took advantage of the investment opportunities presented by these changes. Since the inception of the strategy in 2013, its assets have delivered returns of 15% on average per year, four percentage points greater than the MSCI ACWI Index over the same period, according to Ecofin and Bloomberg.

The organisation has identified opportunities under this strategy in sectors including renewables, batteries, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency.

Brent Newcomb, Ecofin president said: "[The award] is a welcome affirmation of our talented team and the continued world-class execution of our sustainable hedge fund.

"Moreover, our focus on climate change, an area with boundless growth opportunities as well as secular winners and losers, is seeing newfound attention for its return potential and its positive impact on the environment."

Ecofin's other investment strategies concern: decarbonising electricity in North America, Europe and Asia; under-funded social infrastructure projects in education, healthcare and housing; and solving the global water supply and demand imbalance.

Ecofin donates 5% of its water strategy's annual revenues to non-profit organisation Water.org, a global non-profit organisation working to bring water and sanitation to the world.
