The international circular economy specialist Reconomy stood out in 2024 by delivering an industry-first Circularity Scorecard, which measures and communicates the environmental performance of its recycling and resource recovery operations.
With no existing standard, Reconomy built the scorecard using methodologies such as Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) and Circular Footprint Formula (CFF), aligning with European Commission guidance. The result is a multi-dimensional tool that evaluates carbon, water, land use, and material retention.
According to Reconomy, the scorecard supports internal performance management and enables clients to better understand their sustainability outcomes, fostering shared accountability and progress.
The firm also launched a textile extended producer responsibility (EPR) solution, featuring Digital Product Passports, designed to help clients meet global regulations while measuring sustainability outcomes. EPR is a waste and pollution management concept that encourages companies to design more sustainable and recyclable products and manufacturing processes.
According to Reconomy, the textiles industry is the third most water-intensive sector globally, third in land use, and fourth most carbon-intensive, highlighting the need for transparent, sustainable practices.
The company states its Environmental Action Plan, underpinned by SBTi targets, has led to a 61.2% reduction in carbon intensity and the diversion of 98.5% of waste from landfill since 2021.
Reconomy states it is a tech-enabled, asset-light service advancing the circular economy across 80 countries. Operating across three core capabilities, ‘Recycle, Comply, and Reuse’, Reconomy provides end-to-end solutions across the circular value chain.
