With more than $645 billion invested in sustainable strategiesi, PIMCO has played a defining role in the development of green, social, sustainability and sustainability-linked bond markets.
Judges commended the combination of scale and investment discipline underpinning the firm's approach. Rather than relying solely on bond labels, PIMCO applies a proprietary framework that evaluates use of proceeds, governance, reporting quality and potential impact. More than 4,000 corporate issuersii have been assigned internal ESG scores, while the firm has assessed around 85% of the Green, Social, Sustainability and Sustainability Linked (GSSS) bonds in the Bloomberg Global Aggregate Bond Index.
At the market level, PIMCO regularly engages with sovereign and corporate issuers on sustainable financing frameworks and bond structures, helping to shape new issuance and reporting practices. It is also active in industry initiatives, such as the development of climate transition bond standards through the International Capital Market Association (ICMA).
"Impact through ESG is a combination of AUM and investment philosophy & process," said one Sustainable Investment Awards judge. "PIMCO have excelled in all these areas and have developed sub-categories that recognise the difficultly in a one-size-fits-all approach to ESG."
