Municipals such as local governments and agencies currently represent the third largest sustainable bond issuer type in North America, having issued more than 865 sustainable bonds since 2012. Although municipals' share of the overall market has slightly decreased in the last few years, in absolute terms their significance has only continued to grow; indeed 2021 marked a bumper year for sustainable municipal issuance after total issuance hit $27bn.
