We create industry-leading research-enhanced solutions that clients use to gain insight into and improve transparency across the investment process.

At MSCI, our sustainability and climate solutions:

  • Capture new data sets, enhance existing models, and develop new models to cover evolving sustainability & climate needs and regulatory requirements impacting our clients.
  • Provide broad coverage of asset classes and securities to enable a consistent approach across the full portfolio, with a focus on fixed income and private assets.
  • Enable integration into the investment process and reporting needs, and facilitate a common language across the capital markets ecosystem. 

MSCI ESG Ratings are designed to measure companies’ resilience to financially relevant, industry-specific sustainability risks and opportunities. MSCI ESG Ratings use a rules-based methodology to identify industry leaders and laggards, assigning each company an industry-relative letter rating from AAA to CCC based on how well they manage these risks and opportunities relative to peers.

MSCI Business Involvement Screening Research (BISR) goes beyond surface-level classifications to identify specific company-level activities using verified data, conservative revenue models, and multi-layered reviews. It combines automated and manual analysis, company engagement, and rigorous quality checks to provide transparent, decision-grade insights for investors.

MSCI Controversies identifies involvement in major sustainability and climate controversies and adherence to international norms. It’s designed to provide timely and consistent assessments of controversies through a framework aiming to align with international norms.  

MSCI GeoSpatial Asset Intelligence provides drill-down insights into physical and nature risk, linking portfolios or loan books to individual asset locations. It covers 14 physical hazards and 11 scenarios (NGFS, IPCC), assessing exposures and financial impacts across corporate and real estate assets. Leveraging MSCI’s data expertise and partnerships with Google Cloud, Fathom, WWF, and Swiss Re, it includes 2 million asset locations for 700,000 private and public companies to support risk assessment (As of April 2, 2025).

MSCI Energy Transition Framework offers a standardized framework that creates a common language for investors to consistently assess and compare transition risks, readiness, and opportunities across sectors, issuers, and portfolios.

MSCI Carbon Project Rating,s assessing over 4,000 carbon projects with investor-grade ratings, enables clients to assess risks, benchmark against peers and focus on high-integrity projects (As of September 25, 2024)

MSCI Carbon Credit Price Indexes are a new generation of pricing references – grounded in real market price data and representing transaction value. With 13 indexes by type, quality, and eligibility, they are designed to provide standardized reference prices to support valuation, risk management, supply contracts, and investment decisions.

Where and how do you source your data?

MSCI provides over 80 million data points annually, analyzing 135,000 company reports and offering 4,000 raw and 17,000 derived data points per issuer. Our research integrates alternative data from 300 public sources, including two million news articles and one million documents (As of February 2024).
