Brief description of the data offering
Global Standards Screening (GSS) assesses the impact that companies have on stakeholders and the extent to which companies are involved in violations of international norms¹ and standards. Specifically, GSS provides Morningstar Sustainalytics' opinion as to whether a company is violating, or is at risk of violating, one or more principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and related international norms and standards.
Morningstar Sustainalytics applies its own approach to assess company compliance with relevant international norms, assigning one of the following three assessments: Non-compliant, Watchlist, or Compliant.
Our research provides assessments covering the UN Global Compact Principles, the International Labour Organization’s (ILO) Conventions, the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises, and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). Users of GSS gain an in-depth understanding of norms-related issues by accessing qualitative analyses on company accountability, severity of impacts, and the quality of company management responses from the perspective of relevant international standards.
Where and how do you source your data?
We screen 70,000 media and NGO sources daily to identify relevant news. News items are assessed and classified by a dedicated incidents team. Incidents are then analyzed on case and company-level and an assessment is made against the relevant Global Compact principle(s). An oversight committee consisting of senior representatives from Research and Methodology teams reviews and approves all assessments. Only after company contact regarding an allegation and an oversight committee’s evaluation is a company classified as Watchlist or Non-compliant. Clients can access company profiles via the online platform in addition to receiving a quarterly update report.
