Brief description of the data offering

The Minerva IClima Climate Mitigation Index approach is driven by the principle that the most effective way to reduce CO₂ equivalent (CO2e) emissions in the atmosphere is to avoid emitting them altogether. Its methodology centres on developing an equity index aligned with the goal of global decarbonisation.

The methodology focuses on companies offering products and services that displace emission-producing alternatives – thus enabling CO2e avoidance. This is a shift from other ‘low-carbon’ approaches that focus on a company’s own emission reduction actions. This approach aims to fill a gap in the market by helping investors identify companies focused on providing the solutions that enable significant emission reductions.

The unique Minerva iClima taxonomy classifies companies operating in the climate sector and evaluates their green and brown revenues, as well as ESG norms screening and controversial products analysis. This helps to identify the companies with significant decarbonisation potential.

To quantify the impact of the companies in the index, the CO2e avoidance potential of the products and services from each company is analysed. This can help to identify and evaluate the companies that contribute to emissions avoidance by offering climate solutions with significantly lower greenhouse gas outputs than existing alternatives. This approach can also provide a robust, forward-looking metric for climate impact assessment that can be compared to global CO2e reduction needs.

As well as the Mitigation Strategy, Minerva provides index strategies aligned with five other thematic pillars of climate action:

  • Climate adaptation
  • Smart energy
  • Early-stage revenues
  • Long-duration energy storage
  • Circular economy
