Brief description of the data offering

ISS STOXX provides a range of high-quality data & actionable intelligence on climate change and nature-related risk to support financial market participants to understand, measure, and act on climate-related risks and their impact on investments across asset classes. We have a dedicated team of climate specialists who are industry leaders on climate change issues, located across our global offices.

  • GHG Emissions Data: We use a sophisticated, proprietary approximation system, developed over the course of three years in partnership with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, to estimate emissions, which includes over 800 climate-relevant sector and subsector-specific models.
  • Transition Risk Analysis: a forward-looking assessment of the climate-related performance of companies, considering industry-specific challenges and risk profiles, as well as companies’ positive impact.

  • Physical Risk Assessment and Stress-Testing: includes Physical Risk Score, allowing peer comparisons, Value at Risk, and Physical Risk Management Score.

  • Climate Scenario Alignment & Temperature Score covering up to 22 climate scenarios provided by leading models such as the IEA, OECM, and NGFS

  • Carbon Risk Rating: an evaluation of the extent to which a company copes with future challenges related to climate change and seizes opportunities arising from a transition to a low-carbon economy.

  • Net Zero Solutions: helps investors understand the level of disclosure and target setting they can expect from an issuer today, and how this translates into issuer- and portfolio-level Net Zero alignment.

  • Industry Average Emission Data: Allows banks and insurance companies, that need to comply with mandatory climate-related disclosure frameworks, such as the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and European Banking Authority (EBA) Pillar 3, to estimate emissions for non-listed companies, small and medium enterprises, and other alternative investments.

  • Bespoke alternative asset coverage covering emissions, transition and physical risk, and scenario alignment

  • Biodiversity Impact Assessment Tool: assessing the impact of a company’s business and supply chain activities on biodiversity

  • Water Risk Rating: a holistic and granular assessment of a company’s overall exposure to freshwater-related risk

Where and how do you source your data?

Emissions data

ISS STOXX collects self-reported greenhouse gas emissions data from publicly available sources, including corporate social responsibility reports, CDP, investor relations communications, websites, and others. This data is assigned with a trust metric to indicate the quality of self-reported data. For non-reporting companies, or those who report with a low trust metric, we use in-house emissions modelling methodology, allowing us to calculate GHG emissions of companies based on those criteria most relevant to their line of business.

Additional climate data is collected from a range of sources, including:

  • Third-party providers for key financial indicators
  • Public information, including annual reports, etc.
  • Subscription databases, including data from CDP, Science Based Targets Initiative
Forecast data from IEA on decarbonisation pathways and market growth projections from a well-respected macro-analysis forecast.

The Biodiversity Impact Assessment Tool uses a mix of publicly available/open-source databases (EXIOBASE), external databases (ecoinvent, etc.), and proprietary databases (ESG Corporate Rating, SDG Impact Rating, Energy & Extractives Data, etc.).

Bespoke Alternative Asset Coverage relies on input received from the client.

What are the key attributes that differentiate the data you offer?

Through its dedicated climate team, ISS STOXX has been a pioneer in developing and applying new methodologies for the measurement of climate impact. Our approach to measuring the climate impact of investment portfolios delivers comprehensive, high-quality coverage with a detailed and transparent analysis.

A unique and sophisticated emissions modelling system
We utilize a sophisticated approximation system to estimate emissions, including over 800 climate-relevant sector and subsector-specific models, allowing us to calculate the GHG emissions of companies based on those criteria that are most relevant to their line of business. The approximation system is one of the most granular modelling approaches in the market. Our estimation model uses a range of financial indicators to estimate the emissions of companies and does not rely solely on revenue to calculate emissions.

Proprietary carbon-specific classification system.
We re-classify companies based on their carbon profile using our in-house industry classification system. Applying models based on traditional sector systems, such as the Global Industry Classification Standard (“GICS”) or the Industrial Classification Benchmark (“ICB”), may group companies together that have a very different carbon profile.

Data quality and transparency
ISS ESG is committed to applying the highest standards of greenhouse gas accounting capabilities with unmatched breadth and depth of investments coverage, verification, and approximation. Additionally, we help ensure transparency by including a trust and quality rating for every data point.

Experience
We work with financial market participants and governments to screen trillions of dollars in assets under management for their climate impact. We partner with a wide range of other specialists on a non-exclusive basis to complement our research solutions with premier market offerings. In June 2024, ISS STOXX launched the Natural Capital Research Institute (NCRI), an independent research team dedicated to advancing the understanding of how nature affects businesses and investment portfolios and helping institutional investors incorporate nature-related considerations in their investment decision-making process.

Most recent significant update:

Q2 2025

  • Net Zero: Expanded universe coverage and depth of the data set and incorporate enhancements in Climate Impact Report.

Q1 2025

  • ISS STOXX Net Zero Transition indices collaboration

Partnered with the STOXX index business to develop the ISS STOXX Net Zero Transition indices, providing an innovative, forward-looking approach to carbon transition. The indices are versions of established benchmarks such as the STOXX® World AC, STOXX® Developed World and STOXX® Europe 600 and follow the International Energy Agency’s Net-Zero Pathway, seeking alignment with the 2050 carbon budget by 2040, based on the ISS ESG scenario alignment toolkit.

  • Climate Sovereign Data enhancement
In January 2025, we enhanced our Climate Sovereign dataset with the release of over 100 new factors in two distinct datasets:
    • The current Sovereign Emission dataset has been enriched by 40 new factors relating to mostly emissions intensities and inclusion of LULUCF emissions, increasing the availability of relevant and comparable metrics for key sovereign and sub-sovereign entities.
    • A new sovereign dataset, Climate Sovereign Impact, comprising over 50 new factors relating to sovereign scenario alignment, based on NGFS phase 5 scenarios.

These enhancements lay the foundation for the creation of a dedicated Sovereign Climate Impact Report, which is planned for release later in 2025.

Q4 2024

  • Latest Available Emissions Data launch
In November 2024, we launched new 'Latest Available Emissions' factors, exposing the latest available modelled or reported emissions values for companies in our coverage, thus providing a dataset that blends reporting years across the universe based on the latest emissions information available. The data is an extension to the Climate Core and Climate Impact datasets.

The intent of the data set is to provide a parallel set of emissions data that is continuously updated and made available on DataDesk as data are reported by companies and quality checked by the ISS STOXX Climate Team. This allows investors to both continuously monitor the climate performance of companies within their portfolios and to fulfil their year-end reporting requirements ahead of the annual update process in early January.

  • Customizable Climate Impact Report launch
In November 2024, we launched a customizable version of our Climate Impact Report, leveraging our newly enhanced Scenario Alignment offering, reflecting the latest developments in best practices for measuring portfolio alignment. In light of the complexity of each model and the plurality of scenarios given as outputs, our new offering enables subscribers to customize the Scenario Alignment section of their Climate Impact Report and base their analysis on a single model that they select. Subscribers can select either a standard or advanced package, incorporating either two or five possible models, respectively, and up to 22 possible scenarios.

Planned future enhancements:

Areas of focus for 2025 include:

  • Climate:
    • Release Sovereign Climate Impact Report
    • Climate Target Credibility and Ambition Assessment
  • Integration with our voting solutions: Significant investment in providing more integration/integrated solutions between our Governance Research & Voting and ESG solutions and workflows including:
    • Custom Voting Research with Net Zero and Biodiversity Options

What trends are you seeing in terms of customer demand?

Climate and nature continue to be primary themes for all investors. The topic of climate changes remains a material risk to all asset classes and is the focus of regulators globally.  Simple, easy to digest climate metrics continue to be included in mainstream investment and reporting.

The focus on nature, through topics like biodiversity loss and deforestation, continues to mature as economic reliance on nature to produce goods and services is recognized. Natural Capital is a necessary consideration when assessing a company's valuation and risk profile.

Firms leading in these areas are increasingly focused on deploying sophisticated solutions and methodologies that leverage asset-level data and geospatial analysis.
