Brief description of the data offering
ChemScore is an initiative from the environmental NGO ChemSec and ranks the world’s top 50 chemical producers on their work to reduce their chemical footprint in four different categories: Hazardous product portfolio, Safer alternatives, Management & Transparency, and Controversies/Impact. Each producer receives a score card with a performance overview, as well as ChemSec’s analysis and recommendations for improving their score for next year. ChemScore was developed in order to provide investors with better information to assess which companies have strong chemicals management strategies, and which that do not.
Where and how do you source your data?
All information in ChemScore builds on information in the public domain, such as production (number of chemicals – not volume) of industrial chemicals in the EU and US, including the production of all their respective subsidiaries on these continents. EU production data comes from the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) and US data from US EPA Chemical data reporting under TSCA. The production of hazardous chemicals outside of the EU and US, which cannot be obtained from public sources, is out of scope. Data is also sourced from the companies’ representatives, sustainability reports and websites, Marketplace – ChemSec’s platform for safer alternatives, the violation tracker project of Good Jobs First, and internet research.
