Brief description of the data offering

Verisk Maplecroft’s Sovereign ESG Ratings set a new standard in measuring and tracking ESG risks for government debt issuers. Built on our proprietary risk indices, the Ratings employ a novel quantitative scoring methodology that does a better job of identifying material changes in an issuer’s sustainability profile than conventional scoring.

We’ve designed the Ratings to help investors of all types, including asset owners and managers large and small, to efficiently put ESG at the centre of their investment processes. We offer the Ratings as a market standard for high-level analysis, while the analytics underpinning the Ratings also provide unique intelligence for advanced users, allowing investors to better position portfolios to minimise downside risks and capitalise on emerging investment opportunities.

Where and how do you source your data?

The Ratings assess 198 countries each quarter, beginning from 2017, across nine dimensions of ESG: four in the Environment pillar (Natural capital endowment and protections, Natural capital degradation, Physical risk and Transition risk), three in the Social pillar (Health, education and resource security, Human rights and Labour rights) and two in the Governance pillar (Institutional strength and Sources of instability). These are derived from 37 indices, constituting ~350 distinct indicators, drawn from our unstructured, geospatial, expert-scored and structured datasets.

We use an array of data collection, aggregation and assessment methods, including machine learning, NLP, GIS and expert scoring, depending on the issue. Customers can access both transformed and raw indicator data, as well as complete methodology and source data detail.
